Patrick Howlett has developed a remarkable web-based process to construct his paintings. Conceptual phrases become the starting points for Google image searches that provide design elements for Howlett’s paintings. If early abstraction began with the analysis of nature, Howlett’s new abstraction derives its energy from the digital information age. It is predicated on an understanding that behind all images lie larger, deeper worlds. His work has been shown across Canada and internationally. He was a semifinalist in the RBC Canadian Painting Competition and has taken part in residencies in Banff and Venice, and Italy. Howlett is represented by Susan Hobbs Gallery in Toronto.
